Choosing the right materials for your oil painting is one of the most important decisions you can make. You will need to invest in good paint, brushes, canvas primer, thinners/solvents for cleaning and some canvas. How can you know if its good quality? There is a big learning curve with anything, and the same can be said about your materials. After trying a few things out, you’ll figure out what materials are best for you.
When you pick out your canvas, start with something that is comfortable. Instead of getting a real high quality of product, focus on learning how to paint first. Make sure the canvas you start on is nice enough to last just in case you like your first paintings. The next thing you need to do is prime the canvas for painting with oil.
If you paint with a crappy brush, you might as well not paint at all. I recommend using a hog’s hair brush because they work great with thick paint. Try out all the different sizes and shapes of brushes and figure out which one works for you. You’ll need a good thinner to clean your brushes between colors. And now its time to pick out some paints. When you are talking about oil pants, get quality. Start with primary colors, then add the misc. colors to your collection later.
